Bone augmentation with tenting technique: a systematic review
Introduction: Reconstruction of maxillofacial defects is a challenging issue and complicated procedure in most cases. Presenting new approaches to facilitate bone regeneration is still going on and no one can absolutely suggest a single method for reconstruction of oral and maxillofacial defects. In current study we aimed to evaluate the success rate of tenting technique as a useful method in bone regeneration.
Materials and methods: Electronic databases (Medline, Embase, Cochrane) were searched by the authors for all articles which were published between 1990 up to November 2014. Data of the defect size, number of the patients, vertical and horizontal augmentation rate, and description of the tenting technique were extracted and organized in a table.
Results: One hundred and four papers were identified in the first search according to the key words. At last 8 investigations was included in this study. In all studies there was no bone resorption around the implants on long term follow up. The greatest amount of vertical augmentation in the studies was 10 mm.
Conclusion: tenting approach may diminish the need of large autogenous bone grafts in reconstruction of localized bone defects. This method may be also helpful in minimizing resorption of the bone graft volume.
Key words: bone graft; bone substitute; tenting technique
